Each song is a very very very very very short quick blast of noisy
grindcore/powerviolence involving the famous or infamous sayings
of the subject individual. When I say short, I'm talking average of 4
seconds here. And they punch and cram all the best
grind/powerviolence/hardcore ever into those 4 or 6 seconds. It's a
statement all right!

metal of their breakout hit album "High On Metal" and just cranks it
up to 666. It's a moshing romp through warehouse hallways full of
society's rejects and patch vested headbangers! Raise your horns!

Hmm I've been posting a lot of grind recently. Is that a bad thing? Naw! Grind is among my fav of the metal/hardcore subgenres. Anyways, this band's album was handed to me while I was at a Gadget show in Worcester, so glad that happened. This is raw and straight to the point grind with a touch of groove riffing to please headbangers. Unrelenting and consistent, there's no breaks nor moments to take a breath. Just pure grind!

So there's this band called Sloth who for the last two or three years have been releasing a noise track practically every day with silly/weird/whatever titles. It's all just noise, but for the fun of it, I thought every other post I'd post one here for no reason other than I find them hilarious. This track is kinda similar to a previous posted track, Socky Octy!!, with that high high high forced bass sound but this has a little bit more treble noise to it. The booming bass sound does seem to pulsate at times but it is subtle. This goes on like this for 12 minutes. Enjoy!

Just randomly revisiting a CD that I bought years ago. So long ago, I don't remember when/where/why I acquired it. This is some pretty standard deathcore, nothing fancy or mindblowing, but it's not terrible. The instrumentalists prove that they can do grindcore based blasts with the best of them and technically proficient enough to do some mosh-worthy breakdowns. Some catchy melodeath riffs are thrown in for good measure.

New England has a rich history of excellent grindcore dating back to the early 80s with Siege and today with bands like Eaten or Intheshit! New Hampshire's Gorepedo is continuing to this long tradition and doing it with the speed and ferocity of a frickin hurricane! I use the word blistering often enough, but man these guys are the very definition of blistering! The tone is straight out of the best death/grind ala Nasum or Trap Them, that wonderfully thick and juicy crunch. This is played at punk/hardcore speeds with punk/hardcore attitudes! Definitely a band to keep an eye out for!

If you liked Gorepedo, then you are going to love Gadget! Like New England, Sweden is also full of some of the stars of grindcore and hardcore/punk. Gadget is definitely among those stars, producing full blown grind that has all the blastbeats and in your face aggression while incorporating elements from thrash, death metal, Swedish dbeat, and other heavy genres. This album is a masterpiece of grind, and definitely will be on my top of 2016!

I've known for a long time that India has solid and rising heavy metal scene, with bands like Bevar Sea, Demonic Resurrection and Dying Embrace making the waves in and outside of India. What I didn't know was how far back in time did the metal flow. Post Mark as far as I can tell is the earliest heavy metal band from India and the earliest to release a full length. Formed in 1988 they played traditional heavy metal with a touch of thrash for good measure. Plus they incorporate traditional Indian folk music elements into their sound. Now the elements are kinda subtle to the unknowing ear, for example, this track apparently uses the beat of Thabal Chongba (a popular Manipuri dance). So this week/post's edition of the Random Band band selection is Talbot from Estonia. Their Facebook claims they are the heaviest duo on Earth and beyond. I gotta say, they make a very persuasive argument. They would play very well on a show with Bedroom Rehab Corporation and Hepatagua. The tone on that bass is sludge heavy and the drummer is powerful enough to blow holes in space and time. Then they bring in a ton of psychedelic and prog synths and atmosphere, and you've got yourself some heavy shit! Totally glad these guys popped up!

There are bands that only seem to get better every time I see them live. Connecticut's Bedroom Rehab Corporation is one of them. Then I learn their recordings perfectly convey the energy, heaviness and rifftastic nature. This 2 piece powerhouse proves that just bass and drums are all one needs to make killer metal. Adam's bass work and tonework is spot on psychedelic and heavy, Meghan provides powerful 1 2 punch drums that pumps up the hard rockin nature of their craft. Adam's voice is gravelly and bluesy, giving an authentic feel. If you ever get the chance to see them live, do it. Their energy on stage is infectious! One of New England's finest!

There are bands that only seem to get better every time I see them live. Kentucky's Savage Master is one of them! This is the true heavy metal from the days when the occult was subject, imagery was dark and twisted, riffs were crafted like ritualistic creations, and frontwomen didn't sing but bark their sinister and sinful words. Wendy O Williams herself would consider this beast a protege! These are savage anthems that would send Tipper Gore running to the closest Parental Advisory sticker. If you ever get the chance to see them live, do it! Their energy on stage is delicious! One of the finest new heavy metal bands!

So there's this band called Sloth who for the last two or three years have been releasing a noise track practically every day with silly/weird/whatever titles. It's all just noise, but for the fun of it, I thought every other post I'd post one here for no reason other than I find them hilarious. Anyways this one is called I'm Half Way There (10/25/16). This might be the most pleasant enjoyable noise single I've heard from them. Imagine super heavy sludge distortion that doesn't change notes or sound. Just stays there. Kinda like Sunn 0))) without any changes whatsoever. Though the more I listen to it, the more I think I hear changes but I'm not sure if that's my brain or the actual track. Anyways, enjoy!

Stuff I Done Listened To Post 3: Dream Theater, Deiphago, БУТ, Deconsecrate

I guess technically I listened to this album this week. I mean, Dream Theater played this over 2 hour long album in its entirety at the Hanover Theatre in Worcester and I was witness to it. This incredibly overwhelming but thoroughly enjoyable hunk of the most proggy prog metal. It was so much prog! Dream Theater is true to form here. Actually I'd say that it's a return to form for them; Going back to the days when they would release concept albums packed to the brim with prog based metal opposed to the more heavier material of recent. This is the type of metal that Berklee kids can only dream (theater?) of constructing. Heh, during the show there was this dude that would occasionally yell out what key the song was in or what scale the music was composed in. "Mixolydian!" or "What time signature was that!?" Oh good times!

There are bands that are often described as violent assaults. In comparison, Deiphago's music is so violent that it would be considered a war crime in some countries. Hailing from the Philippines and Costa Rica, this war machine of a band pummels you with a black/death metal fury that few will be able to stand. This is the real stuff, nothing watered down nor held back. Just pure unadulterated aggressive sound. Love it!

So if there's one thing in music that is a constant, it's that the Czech Republic produces the best grindcore in the world. Not sure what it is about that region of the world, but every Czech grind band I've ever heard has been incredible. БУТ is a prime example of this. The band kills! This is beefed up, bold riffed grind. They know how to grab your ears with a groovy recognizable riff and then bash you into submission. The vocalist has the most awesome grind bark this side of Napalm Death. Damn, I wish I could see them again!

So this week/post's edition of the Random Band band selection is a hardcore infused death metal band from Belgium. So far in my digestion of this band, Deconsecrate sounds like a promising act, molding the brutality of death metal with the in-your-face qualities of hardcore in a way that brings out the best of both styles. The vocalists goes back and forth between death growls and hardcore barks with ease. The guitar work is straight out of the Suffocation/Cannibal Corpse schools of brutality with breakdowns that the NYHC scene would be proud of. This is quality!

Sure they've been doing this novelty for years and they haven't deviated much, but god damn are they good at their craft! This album is among my favs and I always make a point of listening to it while driving around New England in autumn.

I've been a fan of Riverside for sometime now but somehow didn't get around to listening to this record until relatively recently. Major major failure on my part for this album is absolutely stunning. It's been on rotation for at least a month now. A collection of prog rock songs\ that are wonderfully mellows showcasing optimistic melancholic songwriting with Mariusz Duda's trademark angelic voice, Piotr Grudziński's (RIP) soulful and skillful guitar work, Michał Łapaj's blend of 70s prog and somber atmosphere and Mittloff's time changing rhythms. This is a prog fan's dream come true.

For one thing, I can say that I have a fever for cowbell and this song gives me a huge dose of cowbell. That's cause all the sounds on this track was created by a cowbell manipulated and distorted and altered into different sounds and beats. Well hope you enjoy or not!

I read a review of this album that said this album is a melting pot of black metal, NWOBHM, 70s prog and epicness. It was so true that I couldn't come up with my own analogy so I stole it. The riffs are straight out of 1980s Britain and the tone and atmosphere is straight out of 1990s Scandinavia. But then there are synth lines and drum fills that Rush and Dream Theater fans would love. It fits so well together!

I've had this CD in my collection for a few years now after seeing them at MDF and I'm just getting around to giving it a thorough listen. The Devil's Blood is often labeled as a retro band or a throw back to the early 70s, however I would say that their sound is more an update to that style and feel. They certainly sound like they would've fit in perfectly at the original Woodstock with all the psychedelic atmosphere and occult themes. That said, they are not in a haze with the past but using those influences as a template!

So I was going to post an Eiffel 65 song that I had stuck in my head as a result of my wife indirectly mentioning a lyric from it (which I'll save for another day heh), but somehow I stumbled upon this little gem. This is probably the closest one will ever get to hearing a stripped down organic version of this song. It's still pop and electric, but it has electric guitar leads, violins, Latin American rhythm, a relaxed and clean singer, 4 part harmony sections, funky bass lines. It really is refreshing. I might have to check out more from this band!

This is high octane balls to the wall fist pumping heavy metal that is chock full o' riffs, soaring vocals, guitar solos, anthemic songwriting. This is the real deal! I really really hope these guys come around to Ralphs and play, cus I can't imagine this being anything less than the best!

I read a review of this album that said this album is a melting pot of black metal, NWOBHM, 70s prog and epicness. It was so true that I couldn't come up with my own analogy so I stole it. The riffs are straight out of 1980s Britain and the tone and atmosphere is straight out of 1990s Scandinavia. But then there are synth lines and drum fills that Rush and Dream Theater fans would love. It fits so well together!

MOTD - Engorged: A Breath of Fresh Death Metal Air

Last week the Metal Thursday/Worcester metal scene family gathered to celebrate the birth of our brother in horns and arms, the one and only Matt Smith. This man has been an active member of the New England metal scene for years, winning our hearts while headbanging his gorgeous golden locks or playing in fuzzy heavy incredible doom bands or just being one of the friendliest and most badass mofos ever. I call him my hair brother for we share the blessing of having blond curly hair that is perfect, but he's also my brother in metal.
So in honor of this most metal of men, I share with you the early days of Matt Smith's metal career, a band called Engorged. Not to be confused with the slightly more well known death/grind band from Portland, Oregon, this Engorged was formed around 1992 or so in the Worcester area. Matt and his buddies set out to produce their own brand of brutal and dirty death metal. This brand consisted of chunky brutal riffs, fast skillfully chaotic guitar licks, grind blasting pummeling drums and inhuman gruff grunts. All this plus a gritty satanic atmosphere which provided the final key to their brazen sound. Engorged were definitely a force of death metal nature, releasing a killer 4 song demo in 1993 (which I share one song with you!). Sadly, their brutal time together was short, disbanding around 1995.
Fortunately for those of who missed their early run there's a new chapter in the story of Engorged. 2011 saw the return of Engorged from the band. Today they continue to show Worcester and Boston how real old school death metal is done. They sound fresh and new while keeping true to their traditions. It's always to pleasure to see Engorged punish audiences with dirty and raw music, plus they do a fantastic cover of Venom's "In League With Satan." Anyways, happy (belated) birthday Matt Smith! Continue to be the most metal person I know!

MOTD - Nightwish: Nemo dumps snow & silly young metalhead memories

In true unpredictably predictable Wren fashion, I am attempting to restart my lil' blog with a play on a recent meteorological event. Even truer to myself, I'm posting a really really cheesy song that most true metalheads will find repulsive. Ain't I a stinker?
The biggest snow storm of the century has come and gone. This mammoth storm dubbed Nemo by scientists and media caused all sorts of excitement, including a driving ban which has caused me to be happily trapped at my home in North Grafton surrounded by 28.7" of snow. That is a shit ton of snow right there!
Anyways, the name Nemo reminded me of an old favorite song of mine by one of the first metal bands I got into when I was first venturing out into the heavy music realms. I remember first discovering Nightwish randomly on the iTunes music store back in 2004 and thinking "what is this!? This is awesome!" At the time, the idea of heavy metal mixed with operatic vocals was foreign to me but man it got me hooked. I mean, Evanescence I liked a lot but this was way heavier (well, to a young metalhead) and the symphonic elements were even more pronounced. Each song was a tasty bombastic over-the-top nugget of crunchy toned goodness that digested themselves into my brain like Khan's Ceti Alpha V eels. Tarja's powerful classically trained voice was a bright and shiny gem that sparkled over the raging metal fire. Today, I realize and hear that this album "Once" is considered their sorta sell-out record, taking a nu-metal/mainstream rock turn from their usual hyper melodic and solid power metal. Even I admit their earlier work is much better and more honest then this, however you know what, this still holds a very special place in my heart and every time a song from "Once" is played I smile.

First post of 2012, and it's only March. Sorry folks I'll be better at this soon. I have tons and tons of stuff to share plus there are hundreds of shows coming up that will introduce me to new stuff to share, but for now expect random posts every now and then.
So far it seems that my year always starts off with a hardcore show, and 2012's first show was a banger! The Boston area had a violent visit by DC's straight edge hardcore band Coke Bust. They annihilated a tiny recording studio with their in-your-face, super fast and furious force of hardcore mastery. Each song was either a short burst of rebellion, an unrelenting blast of punk noise, an anthem of chugging thrash infused hardcore, a slower fist pounder or a combination of all that and everything raw & brazen. The vocalist spits loud voiced political & social anger at all who agree or disagree. All throughout the show, the energy was unbelievable, no part of the room was safe from the pit that ensued. Even on recording, Coke Bust's intensity is conveyed! I picked up their "Lines In The Sand" full length at the show, it's 30 satisfying minutes of abrasive hardcore that doesn't let up! Check it out!

Nope, I'm not posting another Beerhead track! Yet I'm posting a Beerhead track! What's going on!? Actually, it turns out there was another band called Beerhead from Poland that was active around the same time as the other Beerhead. As a lover of novelties and multiple bands with the same name, I had to get this. Here's a selection for you!
This Beerhead is a lo-fi poorly produced thrash obscurity with beer/alcohol themes. Nothing about this band is meant to be taken seriously or analyzed in detail, this is just sloppy but enjoyable thrash metal. The guitars sound raw & thickly chunky, simple and to the point. The melodies & solos here aren't exactly the most thought out or composed, but they really shouldn't be. Vocals are monotonously death-raspy, sounding like a grumpy old dude who just stubbed his toe. One can easily tell that this was recorded on a tape deck with the most minimalist of equipment, almost on purpose. That said every aspect of their sound can be easily heard, though it is muddy & crackly. In reality that's what thrash should be, ugly & muddy. Basically the precursor to pizza thrash! This description may or may not convince folk to check this out, but really it's a fun listen. Check it out!

MOTD - Dream Theater: Infectious Overindulgance

Last Monday I finally sucked it up and went to see Dream Theater live. In the beginning of my love of metal, Dream Theater was among my favorite bands. I wouldn't call myself a super die hard John Petrucci is the end all of guitarists fan, but god damn they're fun to listen to. Their songs are catchy and anthemic as fuck, while their prog noodling makes me feel wonderfully inaduquate about my musical talents. As a result of their performance on Monday, I'm reliving my enjoyment of their over the top but infectious metal. I've also learned that they pull their shtick off brilliantly well live!
This track was a favorite of mine back in the good ol' days of my metal beginnings. I'd be hard pressed to call it one of their best, but god damn I loved it! "Endless Sacrifice" is from Train Of Thought, a bit of a transition album for Dream Theater. This album attempted to make Dream Theater's trademark heavy prog metal even heavier and crunchier. Petrucci utilizes a more modern & dare I say nu metal tone to his guitar plus groovier & darker riffs, which pairs nicely with the crisp & clear production. The songwriting definitely gets some cues from modern rock/metal bands of the time as evident by the dark intro & buildup to a chunky anthemic chorus that is impossible to get out of your head. However Dream Theater is true to their reputation, as there is at least 4 plus minutes of overindulgent skillful showing off and wankery. Jordan Rudess gets his moment to go nuts here as the rest of the song doesn't really lend itself to excessive keys. He throws in some cartoonish sounds that raise a chuckle. Again, while it's among my favorite Dream Theater songs, it may or may not convert people to their cause. That said it was good to hear it again after so many years on Monday, though admittedly it took me several moments to recognize it. I headbanged hard during the chorus!

Yep, this is a post written from a few days ago (having nothing to do but check out music I've acquired over the last few months but now actually having time to listen it and write about it is quite nice actually)!
Honestly can't say I remember when and why I downloaded this decent EP by this British melodic metalcore band, but hell I'm posting them anyways. Blind Ambitions hails from Canterbury, UK and play a very catchy blend of detuned metalcore & highly melodic hardcore. Low & thick groovy driving djent-like riffs provide one aspect, while anthemic leads ringing out in melodic passion is the other key to their sound. The singer/vocalist has a gruff delivery, resembling that of Hatebreed though with more emotion and less tough angst. Like most bands of their ilk, there's a health dose of chugidy chug breakdowns to allow for moshing & other activities in the pit but this element isn't over powering or annoying. I can't say this is my preferred metal/hardcore sound, Blind Ambitions are good for what they do and fans will eat them up. I did find myself enjoying this enough to post it here for those who would like this more. Blind Ambitions, keep doing your thing, you're fine by me!

Another post? Gasp! Who would've thunk it!? The truth be told this post was written a day or two ago while I was waiting at Grafton Station in Grafton, Massachusetts waiting for 2 hours or so for the next Commuter Rail train to take me to Boston. Hey I was productive! Anyways...
So here's another Maryland Death Fest band that I enjoyed quite a bit back in May! One of the few Baltimore bands to be included in this years lineup and definitely a good choice to both open Day 4 of MDF. Visceral Disgorge are currently taking the brutal death metal banner savagely ripping it's intestines out, gutting it's stomach completely and then feeding it to vultures who then deposit the remains in some unknown desert where the bones are eaten by toxic bacteria who then somehow get incorporated into the fresh water supply of a neighboring town and then everyone gets infected with a disease that cause spastic anal lacerations. They do this with powerful brutal death riffs that are thick and juicy, while being edgy and raw. They have a perfect balance of fast blasting technical & moshable pounding slams for crowds to go wild for and for heads to bang. For a brutal death band, they incorporate a fair amount of groove & melody into the fray. The disgusting gurgaling vocals provide the final key to this grand onslaught. Always staying gutteral, solid and unrelenting. Visceral Disgorge is brutal death metal at it's tightest and sickest, definitely a band that fans of brutality will get a lot of perverted pleasure from. Check them out! If you get a chance to see them live, do it!

Visceral Disgorge are currently taking the brutal death metal banner savagely ripping it's intestines out, gutting it's stomach completely and then feeding it to vultures who then deposit the remains in some unknown desert where the bones are eaten by toxic bacteria who then somehow get incorporated into the fresh water supply of a neighboring town and then everyone gets infected with a disease that cause spastic anal lacerations. They do this with powerful brutal death riffs that are thick and juicy, while being edgy and raw. They have a perfect balance of fast blasting technical & moshable pounding slams for crowds to go wild for and for heads to bang. For a brutal death band, they incorporate a fair amount of groove & melody into the fray. The disgusting gurgaling vocals provide the final key to this grand onslaught. Always staying gutteral, solid and unrelenting. Visceral Disgorge is brutal death metal at it's tightest and sickest, definitely a band that fans of brutality will get a lot of perverted pleasure from. Check them out! In my
tooling around the Metal-Archives, I stumbled across this ol' band
Beerhead. True to my usual
I-check-out-bands-with-silly-or-funny-bandnames, I found a download of their
1992 demo. Judging by the name, one could assume that Motorhead hugely
influences this Polish outfit. Well, they're so highly influenced that
they're pretty much a Motorhead clone; a perfectly executed Motorhead
clone. The vocalist pulls a great Lemmy impersonation; so good that one
could be easily convinced it is Lemmy. The riffs are unrelenting non-stop
punk infused metal, exactly like Motorhead. The guitarist/s are no slouches
at solos, fast but still with melody, exactly like Motorhead. While
definitely not an original sound, they pull it off well, plus they add in a nice
concept novelty, everyone's favorite alcoholic beverage. Every single
song is about beer, drinking beer, looking for beer, wanting another beer, good
beer, bad beer, Motorhead beer, beer beer. Hell, they love their beer so
much that I'm feeling the urge to drink a beer! Unfortunately Beerhead
kinda were a poor man's Motorhead, but they're solid at what they do and one
can tell they're doing it for the fun of it. Check it out!

Boston has been graced with a slew of fantastic touring bands from all over! Last Wednesday was no exception with an explosive tech death outfit visiting from Pennsylvania.
When I say explosive, I mean a nuclear bomb worth of brutality, technical prowess & epic songwriting. Rivers Of Nihil are no slouches at their brand of skillfully played crushing death metal. The guitarists are fierce with their brutal as fuck riffs & kaleidoscopic licks, while the jazzy and progressive inspired drum blasting is fast and unrelenting. The vokillist is a beastly consistent growler, solid and gruff with a nice range. As technical as they are, they haven't forgotten the importance of appealing to simpler ears. They throw in enough chugging riffs and breakdowns to keep headbangers and moshers happy, even a couple ear catching djent/Meshuggah moments to please fans of dropped tuning. For fans of technical death as well as brutal death, Rivers Of Nihil are definitely a band to check out. Wicked nice dudes too! Check it out!

MOTD - Tiger Force: A Danish Heavy Metal Gem

Here's some super obscure but quality heavy metal for you! As many of you know, I have a love for old heavy metal demos from the 80s. A lot of great gems are found among these unknown bands. Tiger Force being a pretty great discovery in my trips around the internet. From Denmark, this little band played bordering thrash-shredding, riffing NWOBHM inspired heavy metal. The galloping rhythms is a dead giveaway of their influences as well as a riff that sounds stolen from Dio. The solos are more than competent. The vocalist is not particularly memorable, sounding like an average young male singer, but the charm is there. Not much is known about these guys unfortunately (the name of this song is open to speculation), but I'd be curious to learn what happened to them for they had some potential. Fans of traditional heavy metal will enjoy this. Check it out!

Yes I'm posting a Christian metalcore band! Suck it! Why am I posting this? To show that I do enjoy some metalcore/deathcore every now and then and I felt like posting it!
Anyways, Texas In July is a Christian metalcore band from Pennsylvania and honestly they're pretty good. Nothing groundbreaking or fancy, nor are they awful (at least to me). Admittedly, a lot of generic elements go into their sound, but fortunately they pull it off well and seem to write some catchy and melodic songs. The guitarists aren't slouches at their instruments, going from radio friendly staccato riffs (ala alternative/nu metal) to almost technical twin guitar leads (ala 2000s melodeath/metalcore), though not much else happens (not a bad thing for this style). The vocalist doesn't fall for the tricks that can break a melodic band utilizing a raspy post-hardcore delivery that I find better then the usual emo-esc style commonly found today. Can't say I paid much attention to the lyrics but I assume they're Christian. Anyways, for those who like a little bit of melodic, semi generic metal (or "metal") every now and then will enjoy Texas In July. However haters of metalcore probably won't be converted (see what I did there?). Check it out!

MOTD - Humanity Falls: Method To The Chaos

Alright! Time to bring back the metals! Well at the very least try to do more blogging! The last few weeks have brought some excellent bands to the Boston/Worcester area, I'd like to share one of them with you.
Humanity Falls is always a welcomed band in Boston, playing at least once or twice a year to lineups including some of the best death/grind bands of the area. I'd call myself a fan as well, enough to drag me out to Everett to see them arrive fashionably late. Just in time to annihilate the crowd with their one of a kind chaos.
Chaos is a great word for this New York based band. This music isn't for the weak of heart, it's fast, loud, chaotic, dissonant, jagged, brutal, obnoxious, irritating, almost completely devoid of an traditional sense of music. Guitarist, Ammo Diaz, sounds like he's just smashing the guitar, rubbing his hand up and down the strings and playing just random notes. Well, he kinda is! There is method to this madness, one can tell that it was thought out and planned to the letter. There are "traditional" death/grind riffs thrown in to the mix for the headbangers and moshers to go to town. Edward Bednarek is a beast on the drums, blasting at both speeds & rhythms that are unimaginable. The snare has a clanging ringing trash can like sound to it that adds to the deranged music. Then the final piece of the puzzle is Eston Brown's ferocious & totally brutal vocals. Powerful & harsh, he's no slouch providing both low end growls and raw grind screams. Humanity Falls is definitely not for everyone, but those with an open mind and a love for chaotic music will get a lot of out of this band. Check it out!
